Welcome to 6th Grade!!!

Welcome!!  I’m Ms. Mary Figel.

This is my 24th year at St. Bede School.

During my time here I’ve always been a middle school teacher.

I’ve taught science, math, literature, religion, and English.

This year my classes include science, religion, and social studies.

St. Bede School is very special to me, and every student is special to me!  I feel that once the student is in my classroom they are forever in my heart!

I’ve also raised 3 amazing kids, 2 daughters and my son.  I also have 1 beautiful granddaughter!

I am a big college football fan, with a goal of visiting every BigTen football stadium for a football game.  So far I’ve been to 6 of the 14 stadiums.

  • I believe all students can learn, however learning takes hard work and effort from both the teacher and the student. I love learning and hope to instill the love of learning into my students, creating lifelong learners.

I want my students to feel the wonder and excitement of science!

My philosophy of teaching science is to use the scientific method to develop critical thinking skills with the ability to draw conclusions.

Students may, and do, forget facts, but they will remember procedure.

I like to relate subject matter to their lives. I like to spark interest through hands-on activities, WebQuests, and class discussions.

As Carl Sagan said, “Science is a way of thinking much more than a body of knowledge.”

I believe that Social Studies is the teaching of skills to help students become more informed, skillful, and critical thinkers. Students will be allowed to form their own opinions and perspectives about society. Social Studies must be relevant to the student so they can use their knowledge in school and out of school. We can connect history to modern day problems by understanding historical issues, analyzing, discussions, and making conclusions.

My greatest task and mission is to share my faith with my family and my students. I believe students need to learn about the existence of God, the nature of God, and the knowledge of God. Student learning will come about by studying our Catholic traditions, seeing examples of Christian living in our school, Church, and homes. Students will be examining their own heart of hearts, listening for God, and choosing to follow Jesus and God’s Word.
