We are off and running in first grade! On the first day of school we started a scavenger hunt with our 8th grade buddies, a scavenger hunt of the school building and classroom. The class has been working on learning our school and classroom procedures and routines too. Finally, we started our first writing assignment. We our working on our First Day of School Poem.
A few things to remember daily. A snack, a simple one healthy item. If you still have our lanyard from last year please bring that to school. They work great for recess and lunch time.
I tend to keep my room cool so please have a sweater or St. Bede School sweatshirt on hand.(PLEASE PUT YOUR LAST NAME AT LEAST IN THESE ITEMS.) Remember hoodies are not allowed in class. Please remember your child needs over the ear headphones for tech class next week.

We are working hard in first grade. In Superkids, we are learning about what our Superkids did during their summer and reviewing our letters. Math class is all about adding. We will be moving into substraction next week. In science class we are learning how scientist work and social studies we are talking about communties and being a citzen. Religion are talked about God's love for us and how that never wanes.
WANTED: MYSTERY READERS!!
Please consider being a mystery reader in first grade. Mystery readers will read a story or 2 to the class on a Friday afternoon at 1:30. We can do this in person or virtually. How does this work? Send me an email that you are interested and we will set up a Friday visit. You will give me 3 clues about you and I share them with the class and they try to guess who will be reading a story that week.

Please remember extra masks and water bottles.
I also allow for and hand lotion for students who need it for their dry chapped hands. Please put your name on the bottle and that will be kept in their locker. They are not allowed to share their lotion with their friends, it's for their use only.

We just completed the first review book in Superkids and have moved into the next review book called "Camp." We are continuing our reviewing our letter/sound relationships along with writing the letters correctly.
This week we will start spelling practice. I will pass out 5 words to the class on Monday and Friday we will have a spelling test. I am hoping this will help with some of the spelling test anxiety.
We are winding down our next topic in math. We will be finishing our work on substraction this week and moving into 5 and 10 relationships.
The class will continue looking at what scientist do and how communities work in social studies.

Please continue to practice telling time with your children even though we will be finishing the unit this week. (Telling time to the hour and half hour). Our next math unit with be measurement. We will mostly use nonstandard unit of measure, such as paper clips and cubes. Also looking at comparing sizes between 3 items. We will finish our Superkids Camp workbook this week and move into the Adventures of Superkids next week. In science we moved into space and patterns in the sky. We had fun observing how shadows change throughout the day last week. Finally, social studies we will be wrapping up our community unit shortly.
It's hard to believe it is the last week of school for 2021! A few things to remember for this week.
12/16 Virtual Christmas Concert. We will record during the day and a link will be provided for families to watch.
12/17 Polar Express Day and Coins for Cause (March of Life) First grade will go to Mass, so therefore it is a comfy clothes and not pjs. Please remember we will still have recess. Hot cocoa and a candy cane will be served. Christmas party to follow in the afternoon.
Last day of school before the winter break.
1/3 School resumes
Please remember book reports and book logs are due this Thursday 12/16.
We will finish our first unit in Adventures of the Superkids this week. When we return in January, we will quickly jump into unit 2. We continue to work on different strategies for addition in math and will switch to substraction in January. In Religion we learned about Advent and the Christmas seasons and finally about Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Waves; sound and light will be what we will study in January in science and social studies will be about maps and globes.
